In the darkened forest of
Those below and those above,
Followed I am through the dead and rustling leaves.
Summer sun or autumn light?
All but forgotten where I might
Have awoken in the midst of those lost trees.
My only clue is the warm
Of the breeze that around me swarms.
Here something whispers: “Winter is not far.”.
There’s a break in the canopy
That offers no new sight to see,
Only the grey that stretches on and on and on.
My steps carry me no farther
The wind carries words from afar, her
Messages are seldom those of comfort, much less of wisdom.
Raindrops and a cold now herald
The days end; my easy path turned feral.
Just how cold and wet remains for me to be seen.
No shelter, no end, no rest,
I wander on, and do my best,
To stay on a straight path, and not become more lost.
With daylight now expired
I sit, my eyes so tired,
And hope when I awaken that the world will be a different place.
I awake without opening my eyes
I’ll not do so voluntarily, something else must pry,
For the rustling of leaves tells me something I ought not to hear.
Standing up and pushing on,
I tread paths where nothing belongs,
And an echo of a whisper repeats: “Winter is not far.”

Ever in darkness I
Removed from daylight
Make my own light.
Ignorance isn’t bliss,
numbness can’t be ecstasy.
I see more at night
than others in the day.
I’d rather not subject myself to the blind.
I can see what is coming.
He must reach up to what he can’t below.
A solemn song the twilight will now sing.
Into dark depths, winding paths to follow.
What good there can the nighttime to him bring?
An age of waiting on the ocean floor,
Patience for questions that delay answers.
Inhabited by his greatest fears; more
Than a passing phobia or cancer.
One wonders if there’s breath under water,
He has been drifting down there for so long.
His arms, can he bring himself to bother?
Perhaps. He’ll soon find that his arms are strong.
In swimming towards the surface he will find,
Darkness and light, both, are repaid in kind.

He speaks to the darkness a question,
The echos repeat it back
Before they give an answer.
Though he is most certainly alone,
He searches for the source in the dark
How can the echo speak of wisdom?
He hears the answer again.
Now he knows
The answer was his all along.
His answer his own
He finds his home
In the dark.
The daylight will find him soon.
From this truth he won’t depart.
She is the watchful in the dusk,
While we’re the waiting.
She stands in the forest dark,
While we’re preparing.
A friend of the ravens and the leaves,
Of melting snow and fallen trees.
Patiently we wait for her to awaken the bees.
Sleeping winter wakes
Springs fluttering eyes, their first look take.
And we the waiting
Gather the first flowers her bees pollenate.
While she, watchful,
Of where to send her first rain,

What paths illuminated by the small stars in the dark
Are to be tread when the deep hours of the night depart?
One may wander and stumble to and fro,
In doing so they squander what time they have to find home.
Given time one may learn what dim path to take
As long as the lesson they do not abbreviate.
Even the wisest are not certain of which dark star to follow,
But their minds are open to learn which ends are hollow.
We all choose a path and further down may choose another,
we cannot always tread the same way as our sisters and brothers.

The eyes within. The eyes without,
The eyes that dwell within me shout:
The walls! The floors! The ceiling! Spies!
The walls surrounding! These mouths they lie!
Once they were without their sight.
Then someone taught them to see. Their blight!
A setting sun on the horizon alights,
The moon, from day, offers no respite
For eyes that should otherwise be dreaming,
In the dark free from paranoia seeming
To take hold all control and stay.
Oh! That the cursed sight of these eyes may
Blink, and from the sun take pause.
Seek the shade, sleep! Break your unwritten laws!
Gaze not back at me reflection!
You ghostly and familiar complection!
When one with his mirror takes to shouting,
It’s too far, he’s taken away laughing.
Not requiring the belief of others to be, the eyes,
From dark corners and darker dreams they, waiting, spy.
Thanks to my brother Jesse for letting me use his art on my blog. 🙂
