Left to Remembering

Left behind in empty rooms
That fill with light shown from the moon.
Daytime shows a different scene.
A small echo found in between
The crumbling walls and floorboards.
A brighter place, more easily adored,
This echo of a memory grows
What’s hidden by the nighttime shows,
And everything left to remembering
Shows home the better place to be.

Mask

This face on the ground
With debris all around,
If it had a mouth
What would it say?
If eyes, what would it see today?
The stealer of identity
A silencer of secrecy.
It becomes anyone and anything,
As swiftly as the past takes wing,
It can be everyone and no one.
And nothing and all blood.
There behind its simple facade,
It laughs, and pretends to be God.

Across Hot Sands

The sun is too bright for these tired eyes,
This mind too tired for the whys.
An explanation is another day in the sun,
With all this stargazing I long to be done.
Chasing clouds profits nothing but broken dreams.
There’s no shade in a desert stretching as far as the eye can see.
Venturing across hot sands to find more stable bedrock,
To find a place where the mirage is not.

Stairs

Stairs above, below.
This. A way to climb back up.
I will fall again.

Empty walls

Empty walls and clear blue skies,
We both grow old: the building and I.
The bricks crumble, leave dust behind.
Who dies first? Me or these walls?
Abandoned brick and mortar fall
Long after my last scrawl.
Both without purpose die alone.
To give and give love we find our home,
In helping each other we find our own.

Answers in the Dark

He speaks to the darkness a question,
The echos repeat it back
Before they give an answer.
Though he is most certainly alone,
He searches for the source in the dark
How can the echo speak of wisdom?
He hears the answer again.
Now he knows
The answer was his all along.
His answer his own
He finds his home
In the dark.
The daylight will find him soon.
From this truth he won’t depart.

Renewal

Across the gap a tempting song.
A pond, a light, a stone.
On the far bank, far beyond,
A vessel long grown cold.
Daylight does nothing to warm.
How can there be a song without a soul?
There is no life within the vacancy.
The void stares back and somehow sings.
Such beautiful things
Set my mind at ease.
I am at waters edge,
and take a step.
Turning to stone, I sink and pledge,
To rise again after my ego-death.
